WALL TEXT
This banner-like painting is constructed like a “flannel graph,” a form invented and used by Sunday-school teachers in the Protestant church. It evokes the story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts.
The objects attached to the surface reinforce the childlike trust that characterized the eunuch’s faith. Around the border is a teaching from Jesus in Matthew 19:12: “For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”
The tassels hanging from the bottom of the banner are pearls, which are compared to the kingdom of heaven in Matthew 13:45-46. On the right side, we see the eunuch, who, having just been baptized, carries away his own pearl of great price.
