The great lesson that I learned from Philip Guston is that we artists can speak very convincingly when we use everyday common objects that we find around us, in our studios, our pockets; things we barely even notice because of their familiarity and universality. These objects are repositories for memories and associations when singled out and spotlighted. Here my watch and my wallet take on new meaning when seen at the foot of a cross
