(Luke 1:38, 45-49) Just as Jesus is known as the second Adam, Mary is called the second Eve. Whereas the first Eve succumbed to the temptations of the devil and then hid from God, Mary submitted to God’s will and then glorified Him even though His will for her demanded far more trust than was required of Eve. This painting is a conflation of the Genesis Temptation and the Gospel’s account of Jesus’ life. In this tropical version, we see Mary as a young Filipina mother holding Jesus on her lap. She is being tempted by the devil in the guise of a snake. She is not intimidated, however, because she holds on to Jesus and He safely holds the proverbial fruit.
