WALL TEXT
This image is at a life-size scale and serves as a portal-like invitation to a meditation on “service.”
The scriptures written on the back wall are from John 12, where Christ predicts his own death. His admonition to his disciples is, “Truly, truly, I say to you unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a seed; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” So, while this Communion table is an affirmation of fellowship among believers, it is also a memorial of Christ’s death and resurrection.
The broken bread represents Christ’s broken, crucified body, and the wine represents his blood shed for the forgiveness of our sins. The lit candle recalls John 12:35: "For a little while longer, the light will be among you. Walk while you have the light so that darkness will not overtake you."
Jesus inverted his disciples’ understanding of service: “Their focus was on honor and what others could do for them. But Jesus clearly defined greatness in terms of service and sacrifice for the sake of others. It sounds backward to us, even [especially] today. Who would possibly seek to achieve this?"
