Seed Gift

In Genesis 1:29, God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food." Often, we pass over this gift and take it for granted. But if it were not for the humble seed, life could not exist as we know it. This stark image of God's hand reaching down from heaven and planting a seed might seem humorous, but it is also a reminder of the origin of all life.

An artist whose work I greatly admire, Philip Guston, created a similar painting that inspired this one. In his painting, however, God’s finger is drawing a line in the sand, as if to indicate the limit of His mercy. I wanted to correct that impression, because a God who has given His only Son to pay the wages of our sin is not limited by anything other than our belief in that sacrifice and His love for us.
