WALL TEXT
This painting pictures a very interesting but visually problematic episode in the life of Samson. He is seeking revenge against the Philistines, a neighboring tribe who had given his bride away to his companion. He decides to gather 300 foxes (which were apparently indigenous to Palestine in those days) and tie a lighted torch to their tails, two by two. He releases them into the grain fields and olive groves of the Philistines, creating a fiery devastation and the beginning of wars of revenge which will culminate in his own spectacular death.
