Madonna (Pensive) and Child with Cross

This painting is from a series of Mother and Child subjects. I wanted to show the psychological state of Mary who had received a rather alarming prophecy from Simeon during the dedication of her child at the Temple. And Jesus, although still a young child–did he already have intimations of his divinity? Did he sense his destiny at the cross?
