He Gave Up His Spirit

Throughout history, the Crucifixion has been a subject for artists’ incessant interpretation and psychological projection. This is the case here.

Jesus, on the edge of death, gives up his spirit as the Scriptures say. He points down to the Earth he loves– whose sins he has now redeemed through his sacrifice on the cross.

God the Father’s hand reaches down from heaven, showing Himself not only as a witness but an active participant in the agony of Christ’s death.

Here, Mary represents mankind –desperately, longingly embracing her Son, and as she now understands, her Lord and Savior.
