Hat Tree #2

This is a familiar image infused with biblical metaphor by the simple inclusion of the crown of thorns. TREE also refers to the Cross, the “tree” on which Christ was hung. 

This casual grouping of hats is rendered in a very casual way, like a colored sketch that an artist would do while trying to find a comfortable yet spatially convincing arrangement of his objects. This casual composition of everyday objects belies the momentous truth that Christ hung in our place on a tree two thousand years ago.  The strategy here is an exercise in “sacramental vision”—seeing God’s eternal truth in everyday situations and objects--theologians say that Kyros or Kingdom time is brought into Kronos, our earthly time.

One might think of alternate titles that also resonate with “sacramental vision” such as ALL THE HATS WE WEAR or GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER?, thereby bringing God’s Kingdom into our presence.
