Forgive Them, Father

Subjects like the Crucifixion have been represented so many times that their power no longer fully registers with modern viewers. It becomes the artist’s job, then, to find new approaches that allow the viewer to “see with new eyes.”

My strategy here was to amplify a dynamic detail of the Crucifixion, eliminate non-essential elements, and arrive at an image that reads more simply—and therefore more powerfully, capturing the intensity of the moment.
