Ephesians 4:18
"They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.”
Ezekiel 36:26
“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
There are many passages in the Bible's Old and New Testaments that address man's fatal malady: hardness of heart.
In this small painting, I render the problem literally by replacing a human heart with one made of obsidian, a very dark, hard stone that chips easily and has a highly reflective surface.
I labeled this concocted piece of anatomy "CARDURA," which I derived from the Latin "CARDIAC" (heart) + "DURA" (hard). In my mind, someone whose heart suffers from "Cardura" has these three obsidian-like characteristics:
First, they are easily offended and feel as if new information were painfully "chipping" away pieces of their heart.
Secondly, they are reactionary, not allowing any new information to be considered before "mirroring" it right back out.
Thirdly, obsidian is surprisingly dark, almost black. It does not absorb light.
