Bacolod is the provincial capitol of Negros Occidental, an island in the southern Philippine archipelago. Volcanoes are the land barriers that divide the islands’ populations. It’s the sea that connects them. The Philippines lies wholly on the “ring of fire”—the volcanic fault line that circles the Pacific ocean. There’s a tenuousness to life here that’s balanced by the resilience of the people and the fauna. These are some of the things I thought about while painting this.
